The **underground railroad** was a **secret way** for **slaves to escape,** to go to states where slavery was abolished or even to Canada. The "conductors" were ex-slaves who guided people to go Norh and be free. "**Underground**" meant secret and "**railroad**" refers to the **paths/ roads** taken by the **slaves**. The **slaves** were called "**passengers**". **Hiding places** were called "**stations**". They were located in caves, farms or even under church floors. They were helped by "**stations masters**" who **hosted** them. It was **illegal**, against the law. The people who **helped** slaves were called **abolitionists**.

She was born a **slave** and became a famous "conductor". She went back again and again to help other slaves and she never got caught even if they had put a bounty on her head. She also fought for the women's right to vote and delivered speeches.
