In [[démocratie représentative]], we are electing people called *representatives* who are supposed to decide on behalf of the citizens and implement general will[^1]. The idea is that representatives own sovereignty[^2] because the citizens delegate theirs to them
So modern representatives democracy are radically different from their Grec ancestor
Each time there is some kind of democracy, there are representatives :
- sortition (in the Boule of Athens for example[^3])
- election[^4], aristocratic way of choosing representatives. Formation of a political class[^5] which is going to have a divergence of their interests from the interests of the people[^6]
- ex : Founding Fathers of modern representatives were also against imperative mandates[^7]
Two sources of legitimacy :
- it's egalitarian
- there are legitimate by the system and not the voters
